On February 15, 2025, the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City organized an international consultation seminar to provide feedback on Ho Chi Minh City’s application for membership in UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
Implementing the “Development Plan for the Creative City Network within UNESCO’s Creative Cities System” by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has assigned the Department of Culture and Sports to lead the preparation of the application for Ho Chi Minh City’s candidacy to join UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network in the field of Film.
With intensive focus and proactive efforts to perfect the application dossier, the official submission to UNESCO is scheduled for March 3. If approved, Ho Chi Minh City will become the first UCCN Film City in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
The city aims to become a hub connecting Vietnamese cinema with the international community, contributing effectively and responsibly to the regional film industry’s overall development. It seeks to establish the Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival (HIFF) as an annual cinematic event, promote the growth of the cultural industry with the goal of contributing 7.2% to the GRDP by 2030, and affirm its status as an inspiring destination in the region.
According to the report, as of 2024, Ho Chi Minh City’s film industry comprises 935 enterprises, with over 100 active film producers employing 9,294 workers, generating revenue of USD 500 million—accounting for 40% of Vietnam’s market.
