On the afternoon of May 23rd, the announcement ceremony for the Vietnam Short Film Competition – Vietnamese 2025 took place at Saigon International University (Ho Chi Minh City). At the event, representatives from cultural management agencies, associations, organizers, and the judging panel shared important insights about the competition as well as its role for young filmmakers, the national film industry, and the strategy for developing the cultural industry.
Regarding the position of short films, Dr. Ngô Phương Lan, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Film Promotion Association, former Director of the Vietnam Cinema Department, and Chair of the judging panel for the Vietnamese 2025 competition, stated that although this genre still lacks a solid market and audience in Vietnam, it serves as an important launching pad in the careers of professional filmmakers. She cited acclaimed filmmakers such as Trần Anh Hùng and Bùi Thạc Chuyên, who both began their careers with short films like Người thiếu phụ Nam Xương (The Woman from Nam Xương) and Cuốc xe đêm (Night Ride), respectively. These early works, some highly praised from the start, helped them build a strong foundation for their careers. Cục Điện ảnh và là Chủ tịch hội đồng giám khảo cuộc thi Vietnamese 2025, cho biết dù thể loại này hiện vẫn chưa thật sự có được thị trường và khán giả ở nước ta, nhưng lại là bệ phóng quan trọng trong sự nghiệp của các nhà làm phim chuyên nghiệp. Bà dẫn chứng những nhà làm phim được đánh giá cao hiện nay như Trần Anh Hùng, Bùi Thạc Chuyên… đều khởi đầu từ những phim ngắn như Người thiếu phụ Nam Xương, hay Cuốc xe đêm, trong đó có những tên tuổi được đánh giá cao ngay từ rất sớm, giúp họ vững bước trong sự nghiệp.
