In celebration of Vietnam Disability Day (April 18), more than 80 students from Nguyễn Đình Chiểu Special School had the opportunity to attend a special film screening designed for visually impaired children. The event was part of the “Rạng” Film Screening Program for Visually Impaired Youth, organized by a group of students from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities – Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.
The students were thrilled to attend the film screening
The selected film was the dubbed version of “Pororo’s Ocean Adventure”, a joyful and heartwarming movie that conveys meaningful messages about friendship and courage.
To ensure the students could fully understand the storyline, a narrator was present to describe the characters’ actions and facial expressions during scenes without dialogue. In this warm and welcoming atmosphere, the children sat in silent anticipation during climactic moments, and the room was filled with laughter and applause when the main character achieved victory.
Many of the attendees were sighted individuals who chose to set aside their “familiar light” to immerse themselves in the world of the visually impaired children. “This is the first time I’ve watched a film, eaten popcorn, and had a drink while blindfolded. The screening not only offered a meaningful experience for the children, but also gave me a deeper understanding and empathy for the challenges faced by those with visual impairments,” shared Mr. Chu Quang Truong, an audience member.
Many participants watched the film blindfolded to better empathize with the visually impaired.
The event went beyond just a movie screening. It also featured meaningful activities such as musical performances, braille writing tutorials for sighted attendees, and the gifting of presents and braille-printed cards to the students.
